Though kyusu simply means "tea pot" in Japanese, in the west the word is often used to refer specifically to yokode kyūsu- side handled tea pots that allow for easy pouring without touching the hot surface of the pot. This kyusu features a clay mesh strainer inside to filter the tea leaves from the liquor when pouring.

Unglazed tea pots like this one should be handled with care and only washed with warm water to allow a patina to develop and season the interior clay surface.*

Thrown on the wheel and fired to vitrification in an oxidized atmosphere.

*If necessary, more thorough cleaning can be done with hot water and baking soda left to steep for two or three hours before rinsing.
