Though kyusu simply means "tea pot" in Japanese, in the west the word is often used to refer specifically to yokode kyūsu- side handled tea pots that allow for easy pouring without touching the hot surface of the pot. This kyusu features a clay mesh strainer inside to filter the tea leaves from the liquor when pouring.
Unglazed tea pots like this one should be handled with care and only washed with warm water to allow a patina to develop and season the interior clay surface.*
