Black wood-fired gaiwan #1

$125.00
The gaiwan is the center piece of a classic gongfu-cha tea set- perfect for brewing Chinese and Taiwanese teas. Simply add your looseleaf tea to the pot, steep with hot water, and tilt the lid to decant the liquor either into a gongdaobei or directly into your teacup. This gaiwan holds about 100ml of liquid.

Wood-firing is a time and labor-intensive process that takes days and sometimes weeks to complete. The results vary greatly and many pieces do not survive the firing process. However, the pots that make the cut invariably feature dynamic coloration from the fire and ash that coats the unglazed surface. Wood-fired pieces should be handled with care and only washed with warm water to allow a patina to develop and season the interior clay surface.

Thrown on the wheel and fired to ~2350°F/1300°C in a wood-burning kiln.

All pieces are handmade in Chicago IL by Dani Fogarty.
